Learning Goal: to think about our role in society (sociology)
Welcome Back!
We have a jam packed last two weeks in class! We will be finishing our ISU projects, having a visit from BCI, and completing a mini sociology unit! Be ready to work!
1. Sociology's Big Idea: "Society shapes us and therefore we shape society."
- sociologists believe that social identity is not "static"
- life stages determine social roles and identities
- stages: young single adult, newly married couple, family with young children, family with adolescents, family in mid-life, and family in later life
Tajfel's social identity theory -> group membership shapes one's identity
Erving Goffman -> all human behaviour is acted
-> how does technology influence this? (ie dating)
Primary Groups: personal and emotional relationships between members
Secondary Groups: impersonal or formal gathering of people
Virtual Community: only communicate virtually -> Dunbar theory
