Learning Goals: to consider how social identity is formed and to practice oral presentation skills
1. Debate: be it resolved that "all human behaviour is acted" 2. Debate debrief 3. Gallery Walk: how do we develop a sense of identity? 4. Group Task: formative research presentation -> choose a pop culture item (song, tv series, movie, internet meme, etc) -> in your group, think like sociologists to consider the effect your choice has on its audience -> also consider the media messages present -> how does your item reflect the current society? -> has it been a springboard for other items? (if so, what is the influence and / or how does it reflect current ideologies in society?) -> put together some sort of visual to go along with your thoughts Learning Goals: to learn about the concepts sociologists believe influence behaviour and to provide feedback on writing -> Inquiry Question: how do we become socialized? 1. Modern Family -> family, gender, culture, media Primary = life skills
Secondary = behaviour in group settings Anticipatory = plan ahead Resocialization = old behaviour transforms into new more acceptable 2. Sociology: studies the interactions among people living together in a society and their actions, beliefs, and behaviours in order to understand the society. -> August Comte is the father of sociology -> observed that society is constantly changing creating struggle for individuals and groups -> struggle = good -> also believed that we must use the scientific method to collect concrete, measurable, and testable data (called positivism) 2. Symbols: in a society, symbols are shared and learned so that everyone understands Values: shared ideas and standards that a specific group considers acceptable and binding Norms: expectations about how people should behave Role: the expected behaviour of a person in a particular social position Structural Functionalism - Emile Durkheim and Talcott Parsons Conflict Theory - Karl Marx Feminist - Dorothy Smith Symbolic Interactionism - Max Weber, Chicago School, Charles Cooley and Herbert Mead 3.
